West Market Street from S. Main. Circa 1885. All of the buildings in this photo are gone today.

Greetings ~

I have lived in the Akron area all of my life. I have seen things come and go. Many of the landmark buildings in Akron are still there. Some have changed and have been updated and renovated. But many are gone today.

When I was growing up in the 1950s and '60s, Akron was a wonderful city. Sure, it had it's flaws, but, all-in-all, it was much better than many I know of. But Akron was never a huge city like Cleveland, Columbus, etc. Back at the turn of the 20th Century, Akron was known as the Rubber Capital of the World. We had all the tire factories here. Firestone, Goodyear, B.F. Goodrich, Mohawk, General Tire, the list goes on. But all that is gone today.

Today Akron stands as a mundane little city that is not known for very much at all. This blog shows pictures, many of which I took myself, of landmarks back at the time they were being torn down. If your over 50 and have lived in Akron, you probably remember some, or all of them. Or, at least you have heard of them. Sit back, adjust that pillow behind you, settle in and check it out.
